A PhD thesis at the University of Basra, College of Fine Arts, examines the semiotics of patterns in contemporary Arabic ceramics

A PhD thesis at the College of Fine Arts at Basra University examined the semiotics of patterns in contemporary Arabic ceramics.

The thesis presented by researcher Rola Abdul Ilah Alwan comprised four chapters.

The first chapter posed the research problem, which was identified by answering two questions related to the semiotics and presence of patterns in contemporary Arab ceramics, an attempt to uncover their types, patterns, standards, and the extent of their impact on contemporary Arab ceramics.

The second chapter includes three clatic topics. The first topic is the evolution of methods of analytical art criticism and the emergence of the semiotic critical approach. The second topic the patterns - its philosophy - its application. The third topic is contemporary Arab ceramics and its artistic development.

The third chapter referred to the research community, which included the ceramic artistic experiences of Arab artists in order to represent the ceramic experience in the Arab world.

The fourth chapter presented the findings, conclusions and recommendations.

She showed the importance of the research ... in revealing the concept of semiotics in contemporary Arab ceramics and its applications that can be read in the works of contemporary Arab potters.

The thesis concludes ... the artistic patterns included in the contemporary Arab ceramic work are the result of the artist's experimental attempts to update his ideas, techniques and methods according to the contemporary global artistic spread.

The thesis recommended .. Although modernity is the predominant picture of the formations of patterns in its semiotic aspects, it included a capacity in its artistic presentation of the approaches of ancient, Arab and Islamic legacies, which led to this being reflected in the methods demonstrated by this study.
