
In a new achievement added to the record of the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Basra, Dr. Baha Al-Kazemi, a lecturer in the Department of film and Television Arts, won the best Arabic short fiction film award for his film (Al-Mulla), at the Sharjah International Film Festival for children and youth 2025, one of the most prominent Arab festivals concerned with youth and humanitarian cinema.
The film is produced by Basra Cinema Center, in cooperation with the Faculty of Fine Arts, written by Hani Al-Quraishi, directed by Baha Al-Kazemi, and starring an elite group of Iraqi artists, led by Mahmoud Abu al-Abbas.
For his part, the dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts, Dr. Nasser Samari Jafar, congratulated this honorable victory, which is a qualitative addition, and affirmed his full support for the academic creativity in the faculty in all fields and artistic forums.
Al-Kazemi explained that this victory represents an appreciation for the status of Iraqi cinema in international forums, and this award "bears us a double responsibility towards our upcoming academic and artistic projects to raise the name of Basra University, the College of Fine Arts and the Department of film and Television Arts.
Al-Kazemi pointed out that the Department of film and Television Arts at the college has a bright future ahead of it in light of the annual cinematic output represented by the projects of the Department's students and the film festival, which is preparing to launch its fourth edition this year, as well as its growing presence at Arab and international festivals and forums dealing with university film.
This victory is a qualitative addition to the career of Iraqi cinema, and an indicator of the growing presence of Basra University's competencies in the Arab and international cultural scene.
